Security flaws in new WebGL technology put PCs and data at risk

PRLog (Press Release)– May 09, 2011– Researchers at Context Information Security, an international security consultancy, have uncovered serious security flaws in the new WebGL technology that creates 3D graphics in a browser with the same speed and detail as hardware-accelerated PC games and applications. Context says that design level security issues give potentially malicious web pages low level access to graphics cards that could provide a 'back door' for hackers and compromise data stored on internet-connected machines.

WebGL is currently supported on Linux, OSX and Windows operating systems, using Firefox 4, Safari and Google Chrome browsers. In addition to desktops and notebooks, WebGL is also being adopted for use in other devices including smart phones and is rapidly increasing in popularity.

"The risks stem from the fact that most graphics cards and drivers have not been written with security in mind so that the interface (API) they expose assumes that the applications are trusted," says Michael Jordon, Research and Development Manager at Context. "While this may be true for local applications, the use of WebGL-enabled browser-based applications with certain graphics cards now poses serious threats from breaking the cross domain security principle to denial of service attacks, potentially leading to full exploitation of a user's machine."

"We think it is important to raise awareness of this issue before WebGL becomes more widely adopted because this is not an implementation problem, but is down largely to the WebGL specification, which is inherently insecure," adds Jordon. "In the short term, individual end users or IT departments can avoid potential problems by simply disabling WebGL within their browsers; but the only long term solution is for the developers of WebGL itself to ensure that the specification is designed and tested to prevent these types of risks."

WebGL 1.0 was officially released in March this year by The Khronos Group, a non-profit consortium of companies including Google, Apple, Intel and Mozilla working to create open standard APIs to display digital interactive media across all platforms and devices. It is essentially a graphics library that extends the functionality of JavaScript to allow it to create interactive 3D graphics within a browser without using plug-ins.

BMI projects the addressable domestic market for IT products and services to reach US$84.6bn in 2011. In 2010, the UK IT market recovery was more anaemic than in most European IT markets, suggesting that uncertainty surrounds the strength of the UK economic recovery and the impending steep public sector budget cuts.

UK PC shipments slipped back into negative growth in the final quarter of 2010 due to a disappointing pre-Christmas shopping season. Surveys of UK businesses conducted in 2010 showed a trend of improved business sentiment, but budgets remain tight.

Industry Developments

The coalition government elected in May 2010 imposed a moratorium on new IT contracts of more than GBP1mn and announced its intention to renegotiate a number of existing contracts. However, conditions showed signs of gradual improvement in the latter part of the year, with some new managed services and systems integrations contacts being awarded.

However, the government's efficiency drive will also be a source of opportunities for IT suppliers as more public sector bodies look to utilise digital means to deliver services efficiently. The Home Offices Border Agency has announced plans to invest in new cost-saving technology. Services such as Job Seekers' Allowance applications and new business tax registrations are among those earmarked for digital delivery.

In September 2010, Atos Origin became one of the first IT services vendors to sign an agreement to restart its commercial activity with the UK government following the moratorium on new IT projects. In the second half of 2010, the consumer notebook market weakened amid continued weak consumer sentiment. Acer saw its shipments drop by a double-digit year-on-year (y-o-y) factor in Q410, compared with the same period of 2009, which resulted in it losing first place to Hewlett-Packard (HP). Acer had made a steady rise in 2009, fuelled by the relatively robust demand for consumer notebooks, which is its strong suit.

BMI forecasts the UK's addressable computer hardware market will be worth around US$20.3bn in 2011, up from an estimated US$19.3bn in 2010. Total PC revenues including notebooks and desktops are forecast at US$16.4bn and are projected to rise to US$20.5bn by 2015 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%.

But 20 years is a long time and naturally things evolve but I feel like I have just blinked and the world of computers has changed before my eyes. One second the laptop is the computer of choice and now its touchscreen objects called ipads. And to go one step further, the Chinese have brought out this thing called the epad which is a fraction of the cost of an ipad. They are referred to as "tablets" but I just cannot get this image out of my mind of a monk carving ancient literature on a smooth flat square stone. Can you?

With money tight and a desire to own the latest craze, I purchased one online from a local online store called epad.ie. The next day it arrived and I was out in my slippers and dressing gown to greet the postman to sign for it. It wasn't as big as the ipad (7 inch screen to be exact) but it was a lot bigger than the iphone and just the right size for me to carry as called on my clients. It took me a while to get the feel of it but once I did there was no stopping me. I was very impressed by the quality of the picture as I watched one of my favourite movies, Goodfellas on it. And although the internet speed was a bit slower than what Im used to, it wasnt a problem for me. If you are an iphone fanatic and there are lots of them out there, you will love the epad. For all you technically minded out there, here is the lowdown of what the epad actually has under its roof: Its operating system is google android 1.6 which supports software such as excel, word and powepoint and also enables you to view files such as pdf and software like msn and skype. You can even attach a webcam to it to skype all your international friends!. The memory is 256MB which is reasonable considering the price, and the battery lasts around 2 hours which is the same as my Dell laptop which was impressive. It also comes in a whole range of language options from French to Japanese.

Windows 7 Home Premium establishes a baseline feature set, with the pricier versions adding more features. Crucially, no features are removed as you move up the price scale as they were on Vista, so every version of Windows 7 includes Media Center, for example. Microsoft includes both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of each version in the full retail box, but we'd recommend skipping the 32-bit version if your CPU supports x86-64 extensions, as it enables you to address more memory and register space, which can result in better application performance.

Pretty much every recent desktop CPU since the original Athlon 64 supports 64-bit, alth remote control helicopter ough some Atom and similar low-power CPUs don't. Many applications have 64-bit executables to deliver extra performance, but Windows 7 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, so you shouldn't see incompatibility problems. A fourth edition, Windows 7 Starter, won't be sold in shops and will only be pre-installed on netbooks. The number of applications running concurrently has been limited to three, Aero mode has been removed and so has Media Center - these are hardly likely to cause problems a netbook, but we will be looking at running a full version of Windows 7 on a netbook very soon.

Home Premium is the best choice for most people, but there are reasons to look beyond it, even if you're not running a business. For example, even the 64-bit version of Home Premium is limited to addressing a maximum of 16GB of system memory, and it can only be used on single-socket systems. If you're running a dual-processor workstation, you'll need Professional or Ultimate.

Professional and Ultimate also include Windows XP Mode, which runs a fully fledged version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 in a virtual machine. This is a great addition for businesses who are concerned that their applications won't run natively in Windows 7 because it enables them to run in a familiar environment. However, there is one more provision that you need to consider on top of buying a more expensive version of Windows 7 - you will need a CPU with built-in virtualisation support, otherwise the virtual machine will not start.
